Pet Photography

Here are a few photographs I took of my cats in the back garden when we had the beautiful sunshine a few weeks ago.  If done professionally I would erase some of the objects that I have caught in the photographs for more of a natural look.  Also one of my cats never seems to have his eyes open, with is really annoying.  Enjoy :)

Holly Sharpe

It's Follow Friday!

Holly Sharpe creates beautiful, detailed and inspirational drawings, illustrations and designs.  Holly has been freelancing since she graduated from University with a 1st Class degree in 2008.  Holly draws freely, bold and colourful.  She tends to draw people in a variety of medias and then sometimes adds the wonders of nature to bring out colour and textures in her work.

I find Holly's work very inspirational and it drives me to draw.  You can see through her work how much passion and hard work is put into each piece as well as the enjoyment.

You can buy Holly's original prints here.  On Society6 you can buy Holly's drawings on a variety of products including art prints, frames art prints, stretched canvases, stationery cards, iPhone cases, iPhone &iPod skins, laptop & iPad skins, Hoodies and t-shirts.  You can also buy Holly's original drawings and prints on Etsy.

You can find Holly on Facebook. Holly also has two blogs - Inspirations and More of Holly's Work.

Have you always wanted to design?

I wouldn't say that I have always wanted to design no. I have always wanted to draw and to do something involving art, but I wasn't always certain exactly how. Mainly I knew I wanted to paint. When I was younger I did think I wanted to be a fashion designer for a while! Although even then, it was more about drawing girls with big dresses that I loved.

How long have been working in illustration?

While I was at University, studying Textiles, I used to draw a lot of fashion illustrations to put my designs into context. This is when it really started and I began to develop quite a passion for fashion illustration. It has only been in the past few months that I have decided to make more of a transition from textiles to illustration. I think it is possible to make more than one thing work at once. I still do a lot of textile design work, and I also still paint/draw, so I plan to keep it all going.

How have you got to where you are now?

Hard work, determination and perseverance are the main elements that got me to where I am now. Networking and increasing my web presence has also been a big factor recently. Now, I thrive on positive feedback, the more work I put out there and people love, the more work I want to do. It really drives my passion and helps me to never become complacent with my work, because you can always do even better!

What inspires you?

This is probably a cliché, but everything inspires me. Beautiful people, beautiful words, beautiful scenery, beautiful music, beautiful images, beautiful colours. I am also greatly inspired by many artists, past and present. Although at the same time I think it is important not to get too bogged down and caught up with what other artists/designers are doing.

What motivates you?

I usually have some day dream going around in my head, I just think about an aim that I want to achieve and I keep imagining how it would look and how great I would feel if I made it happen, this always spurs me on. Words, encouragement and getting exciting briefs/commissions also motivates me. I continually strive to improve on something that I have done, I keep pushing myself whilst reflecting on what I have already achieved, this helps.

Do you have a favourite Print?

I don't think I could say I have a favourite print, no. When I first finish a piece, if I like it and am pleased with it, I will get quite obsessed and attached to it in a way, it will usually be on my wall for a short while after, so I will have to look at it a lot and always go back and forth between loving it and being unsure. However, I quickly move on once I start something new, then that becomes the new 'obsession'.... and this pattern continues!

Have you got any new products lined up for your designs?

I currently have a couple of commissions/projects in the pipeline involving my work and products.... I don't want to reveal too much until everything is definite and in production, but I am personally very excited about them! Watch this space...

What is your typical day in the studio?

A typical day in the studio for me begins with an early start, 'early' varies from day to day depending on how late I stayed up (often doing work/attending to internet based tasks). I always eat breakfast whilst browsing what is happening in the web world, checking emails, blogs, my Etsy shop etc. Then I begin my main line of work, which is printed textile design. I usually have some form of brief to work towards. Some days I get straight into it and others it takes me a bit longer, so I'll try and loosen up with some quick sketches/designs and also by doing lots of research on the internet and find inspiring images or colours to work with. Later on in the day, I will usually work on other commission work or draw/paint for my personal work or get lost on the internet, "increasing my web-presence"!

Do you get a lot of support from family and friends?

Yes I get a lot of support from family and friends, their support, encouragement and faith in me means a great deal.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

That is a tough question! I would LOVE to have some of my work published in a book. I also really hope to have an exhibition of my drawings and paintings within this time. As well as progressing in my career, I would really like to travel more within the next five years and see more of the world!

Do you have a favourite designer/illustrator etc?

That is another hard question as I have sooo many! I can't possibly list them all, but I would definitely say that Conrad Roset, Stina Persson and Julie Verhoeven are in my top five!

Is there any advice you’d like to give an up and new coming designer?

If you really want to do it, then believe in yourself and don't stop believing that you are capable. I think you can only grow from experience, so get your name out there and try what you can.

Thank you for your time Holly, I really appreciate it :)

Beautiful Boxes

I love beautifully designed boxes!  They are great for storing everything and anything.  And also if you keep a look out you can get one to match a particular room.  They are great for individuality and bringing your personality into a room.  Here are a few I have seen recently in TKMaxx.

Waiting at the bus stop

I took these photographs with my iPhone during one evening, it's where I usually catch my bus for work.  I thought they worked really especially with the glowing rays of the sunshine.

Nature Photography

When we had the warm sunshine I took a walk to the woods which is only down the road from my house and took many photographs with the SLR I'm borrowing.  What do you think?
